Cartoon showing beaver with cement, owning his nicheNiche Marketing - that is the marketing of products/services to a smaller subset of consumers who have specific identified needs - is becoming one of the only ways for small businesses to get noticed on the Internet.

This is because of increased competition for most general markets and products/services, and their related keywords, which results in problems with achieving high rankings on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). And as we all know, if your business or a link to it isn’t showing up on the first or second page of a SERP, you’re unlikely to get much website traffic from the Search Engines.

Ditto with marketing your website or blog or affiliate link via Social Networks/Media like Facebook or Twitter – if you’re marketing something really general or with commonly used keywords, you’ll drown in a sea of similar websites, Facebook pages, or Social Media profiles.

Hence the rise of the Niche, which is advantageous because each one is reasonably unique. Now some will say it’s really difficult to find a Niche Market (that is, one that really exists and is big enough to be profitable, and with customers who actually want your products/services). Others will say it’s easy – if you break down your Niche Market appropriately, but make sure it is viable/useable.

Here is an example of how to do Niche Market identification and research:-

=> Step 1: Identify your Niche through a breakdown process – here is an example of a really simple, practical way to do it (with thanks and acknowledgement to http://www.squidoo.com/howtofindnichemarkets):

  • Think of a general market - say “WEIGHT LOSS” (it’s best if you know something about it yourself and feel emotionally attached to it).
  • Now think of all the types of equipment/products/tools, and issues that are needed by or affect that market, say quick weight loss, natural weight loss, tape measures, weighing scales, low calorie food and drink, low fat recipes, fashion for bigger people, etc (the ‘WHAT’).
  • Then simply think of all the different types of people or customers in that market, say teenagers, young adults, young women, older women, men, children, pets, etc (the ‘WHO’).
  • Finally, simply put a ‘WHAT’ together with a ’WHO’, or a few related ‘WHATS’ together with a ‘WHO’ or two (maybe ‘natural diets and weight loss recipes for older overweight women’), and you have a Niche Market!
  • It is possible to break down your Niche Market even further, say by area (to create a Micro Niche Market), but be careful of focusing your efforts on something too small - that’s where Step 2 comes in.

=> Step 2: Your potential Niche Market isn’t really of any use, unless you check out the stats to see if it is viable to you. Do some Search Engine and keyword research to see:

  • How consumers in this Niche Market search online for what they need, and how they think (do some keyword research and find related search keywords/phrases that these consumers are using),
  • Which keywords would rank you higher in Search Engines and in Social Media (again, do some keyword research to find suitable long-tail keywords which have a reasonable number of searches but fewer competing websites),
  • What your competition – other online businesses – are doing for this or related markets (check out their websites through Search Engine searches).

Of course there are other factors that come into finding or identifying your Niche or Micro Niche Market, such as: products/services you may already have created or be ready to market; your personal passions; and how much you know about the target Niche Market, those consumers, their needs and the products/services you hope will help them.

If you’re looking for a Niche Market and are passionate about natural/alternative health and beauty products, check out this home business opportunity: Aloe Bee Health - it’s possible to market selected products to specific Niche Markets, such as natural weight loss, for example. This is an example of a blog aimed at such a Niche – HealthyAndSlimWeightLossDiet.com.

  16. You should seriously think about working on expanding this website into a major authority in this market. You evidently have a grasp handle of the subjects everyone is searching for on this website anyways and you could surely even gain a dollar or two off of some promotion. I would explore following recent topics and raising the amount of write ups you put up and I guarantee you’d begin seeing some amazing traffic in the near future. Just a thought, good luck in whatever you do!

  17. I find myself coming to your blog more and more often to the point where my visits are almost daily now!

    Cheers .

  24. Life’s too short to be solemn all the time. So here’s a gag: You only need 2 tools in life – WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn’t move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn’t move but does, use the duct tape.

  25. Another great post. I shared this one on my Facebook – you should look at adding a “like” button to your website.
